Cruciferous vegetables are a source of indole-3-carbinol, which has been studied, along with other
indoles, for the role it may play in lowering the risk of several types of cancer.
Among the Friedel-Crafts reaction substrate of aromatic compounds,
indoles and
indole derivatives have received more and more attention [2] because of their privileged structure and quite pervasiveness in nature [3] as well as their excellent biological activities [4].
These low molecular weight compounds include
indoles, tetrapyrroles, arachidonic acid metabolites, and trp metabolites such as FICZ (6-formylindolo[3,2b]-carbazole), ITE (2-(1H-indol-3-ylcarbonyl)-4-thiazol carboxylic acid methyl ester), indirubin, I3C (indole-3carbinol), and BaP (benzo(a)pyrene) [11, 13-15].
It's rich in chemicals called
indoles which have been shown to keep mice, worms and flies fit as they grow old.
Natural
indoles, indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), attenuate staphylococcal enterotoxin B-mediated liver injury by downregulating miR-31 expression and promoting caspase-2-mediated apoptosis.
Carbohydrate is catabolized to short chain fatty acid (SCFA), C[O.sub.2], [H.sub.2], and C[H.sub.4] and protein is the precursor for SCFA, branched chain fatty acid (BCFA), phenols,
indoles, sulfur, ammonia and amine (Jensen and Jorgensen, 1994).

The essential amino acid tryptophan has been hypothesized to be the ultimate precursor for
indole production, in which tryptophanase enzymes act on tryptophan to produce
indoles (Verhecken 1989, Naegel & Alvarez 2005, Westley et al.
The increased activity is due to the existence of halogen substitution at the five positions of both
indoles. The hydrogen of
indole NH could be donated to the DPPH to form DPPH free radical; by the presence of phenyl ring at the third position of
indole, the DPPH free radical will be stabilized by the resonance.
Dark, leafy vegetables, such as kale, contain
indoles that help detoxify the liver.
